When we talk about low-maintenance, easy to grow and guaranteed to look good no matter what, we’re talking about the ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). Probably our lowest-care plant, it’s actually hard to kill. A quality that makes it a great gift and excellent for a beginner’s confidence. Native to Africa, its waxy, glossy green foliage grows very slow and thrives on minimal water (like every 2-weeks minimal).
- Care Level: I’m Easy! Super easy to care for and perfect for beginners!
- Pet Warning: Toxic to pets if ingested.
- Low Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- Medium Light: This plant prefers low to medium light.
- Low Humidity: This plant doesn’t require any extra humidity.
- Zamioculcas zamiifolia’s are known for their indestructibility and adaptability. Native to the rocky soils in East Africa, they enjoy a warm and humid environment. Their stems are often referenced as feathers, and their underground tubers, where they hold copious amounts of water, are strong enough to crack a ceramic pot if potbound!
- The ZZ plant can produce little white, spathe-type flowers near the base of their stalk, which is almost identical to the flowers of a peace lily. Dutch nurseries started wide-scale commercial propagation of the plant around 1996.
